New Zealand police divers will enter the Waikato River to recover a car driven off a 10-metre bank by a woman who had allegedly run over her partner minutes earlier.
Divers will be deployed about midday on Monday to recover the vehicle, which has been submerged since the incident on Sunday.
Police say the 44-year-old woman ran over her partner at the Ohaupo Road shops near Normandy Ave in Hamilton at about midday on Sunday.
She then drove off a 10-metre bank into the Waikato River.
‘The driver was described by witnesses as driving over the victim a number of times before fleeing – leaving the man with serious injuries,’ acting Detective Inspector Ross McKay said on Sunday.
A witness called police, followed the car to Cobham Dr and kept an eye on it until police arrived, he said.
By that time the woman had driven off the bank into the Waikato River, Mr McKay said.
Four officers got into the water and brought her to shore, with the assistance of a person on a kayak and people in two boats.
She was taken to Waikato Hospital with minor injuries.
