The Dutch specialist in lifting, drilling, and subsea solutions, Huisman, has completed the installation of 650mt pipelay system onboard the vessel Skandi Açu.

The equipment setup work was done at the Huisman Schiedam facility, where the vessel arrived last week.

The Skandi Açu is a 13200 dwt pipe lay support vessels (PLSV) of a VARD 3 05 design.

In August 2013, VARD Holdings, headquartered in Norway, secured at that time the largest order in the company’s history worth USD $1.1 billion to build four pipe lay support vessels (PLSVs) for DOF Subsea and Technip. In addition, Huisman was hired to deliver topside equipment for all four ships.

The first two sister vessels Skandi Açu and Skandi Búzios, with lenght of 146 meters and accommodation capacity of 120 persons, will carry pipe lay towers rated at 650 tons, among the largest ever in the industry. Both vessels are designed specifically for installation of umbilicals, flexible flowlines and risers in Brazil, capable of operating in up to 3,000 m water depths.

The 650mt pipelay system onboard the Skandi Açu will now be tested before it leaves the Huisman Schiedam quayside in April. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2016.

The other two PLSVs, the Skandi Olinda and Skandi Recife will be equipped with a 340 Te lay tower and be fit to operate in up to 2,500 m water depths.
