New facilities proposed for Port Fourchon

PORT OF FOURCHON, LA — If Edison Chouest Offshore and local businessman Jim Moncus have their way, Port Fourchon soon could be home to two new offshore facilities.

Chouest Marketing Manager Daniel W. LaFont says the company is looking at constructing a modified version of its C-Port 1 and 2 facilities, designed specifically for the timely delivery of supplies and equipment to the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Unlike its two counterparts, the latest version would comprise a straight-line uncovered dock with 1,800 ft (549 m) of bulkhead with cranes, he says.

Maranhao state may have oil reserves similar to Campos Basin

The Brazilian Maranhao state in the northeastern part of the country may have offshore oil deposits similar in size to the Campos Basin, which produces 85% of the country’s oil, Maranhao Governor Jackson Lago has said. Petroleo Brasileiro SA, Petrobras and Devon Energy Corp have found oil in deep waters in the Barreirinhas Basin, 160 kilometres (99 miles) off the coast of Sao Luis, the state’s capital, Lago said in an interview in Rio de Janeiro. The Campos Basin has produced an average of 1.65 million barrels a day this year, Petrobras, said on its website. The companies are still determining if the find is commercially viable, Lago said.

Petrobras unable to reach agreement with striking workers

SAO PAULO — Petrobras announces that the company and the oil worker labor unions were unable to reach an agreement to suspend the walkout that was started on Monday (03/23). Although the new proposal was accepted by the parts and contains several advancements made with regard to the labor unions’ demands, after two days of negotiations an understanding was not reached.

Deep Marine Technologies closes diving operations

HOUSTON — Deep Marine Technologies, based out of Houston, Texas, has closed down their diving operations as of Tuesday night.

The company has laid off their diving personnel, but has assisted the laid off employees in getting new work elsewere in the industry.

Busted bolts in Canada heicopter accident weren't changed despite warnings

The Sidney-based parent firm of the helicopter company that recently lost a Sikorsky S-92A chopper and its crew confirmed this week that defective gearbox studs had not been replaced.

Cougar Helicopters is a subsidiary of Vancouver Island Helicopter Aviation Group, based at Victoria International Airport.  On March 12th, one of Cougar’s choppers carrying oil rig workers crashed off St. John’s.  Seventeen of the 18 aboard were killed including former Victoria resident Tim Lanouette, first officer on the flight.

Global federations join forces on offshore work

Global union federations ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) and ICEM (International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers’ Unions) today cemented a working relationship to tackle conditions in the North Sea oil and gas fields.  Representative of offshore workers’ trade unions in Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Norway, Russia and the UK meeting in London pledged to co-operate on all aspects of work in the sector, and applauded the two federations’ decision to pool knowledge and join forces.

Tropical cyclone Izilda off East Africa

Tropical cyclone Izilda struck Madagascar at about 06:00 GMT on 26 March. Data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center suggest that the point of landfall was near 23.7 S, 43.3 E. Izilda brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 120 km/h (74 mph). Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.

Veolia's new vessel Poseidon completes first job in GOM

LEAGUE CITY, TX — Veolia ES Industrial Services announced the addition of the Viking Poseidon to its fleet of deepwater marine vessels.  The vessel was delivered to Galveston Bay in February and has completed its first job in the Gulf of Mexico.  The Poseidon’s design technology and equipment will allow for greater deepwater capabilities at a time when customers are calling for such services.

New IMCA dive company member – Kreuz Subsea

Swiber offshoot Kreuz Subsea is now a certified member of the International Marine Contractors Association – the international trade association representing offshore, marine and subsea engineering companies.

The IMCA granted Kreuz Subsea contractor membership for diving, allowing the Singaporean outfit to boost its subsea business and use its in-house diving support for its offshore construction projects as well as pursue new subsea business opportunities.
