Google diving into 3D mapping of oceans

0

We’ve got Google Earth and Google Sky. Next up will be a map of the world below sea level–Google Ocean.

The company has assembled an advisory group of oceanography experts, and in December invited researchers from institutions around the world to the Mountain View, Calif., Googleplex. There, they discussed plans for creating a 3D oceanographic map, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The tool–for now called Google Ocean, the sources say, though that name could change–is expected to be similar to other 3D online mapping applications. People will be able to see the underwater topography, called bathymetry; search for particular spots or attractions; and navigate through the digital environment by zooming and panning. (The tool, however, is not to be confused with the “Google Ocean” project by France-based Magic Instinct Software that uses Google Earth as a visualization tool for marine data.)

Offshore Oil Drilling to Go Forward

By Bob Ellis

Though President Barack Obama and his minions regularly pander to environmental extremists–and actually believe a lot of that drivel themselves–he may be having some (gulp) second thoughts about rushing ahead with strangling America.

Obama’s  Interior Secretary nominee Senator Ken Salazar said recently that the administration wanted to re-institute the recently lifted ban on offshore drilling, but today Reuters reports new offshore oil exploration will go forward.

Hugh Vickery, a department spokesman, said the department has been notified by the White House that it will be able to proceed with a proposed draft of a five-year plan to lease areas in the Atlantic and Pacific waters for oil and natural gas drilling.

The preliminary plan would authorize 31 energy exploration lease sales between 2010 and 2015 for tracts along the east coast and off the coasts of Alaska and California.

Cyclone brews off west Australian oil region

PERTH (Reuters) – A tropical low that has formed on the remote west Australian coast on Monday may develop into a cyclone, the country’s Bureau of Meteorology said on Monday, in a potential threat to some offshore oil and gas fields.

A tropical low formed about 205 km (127 miles) north of Karratha at 9 a.m. local time and may turn into a cyclone later on Monday as it moves southwest to the west Pilbara coast, the bureau said, forecasting gales with wind gusts of up to 100 kph.

Nigeria needs oil above $40 for offshore fields-NNPC

ABUJA, Jan 27 (Reuters) – Global oil prices need to stay above $40 a barrel to keep deep offshore oil production and exploration economically viable in Nigeria, the head of the country’s state-run oil firm said on Tuesday.

Oil’s sharp drop in the last six months and the global credit crunch have raised concerns that many offshore projects may be delayed or cancelled in the world’s eighth largest oil exporter.

North Sea's Kvitebjorn, Visund Fields Back On Line after Pipeline Repairs

Gas exports from the Kvitebjorn field in the North Sea started Jan. 27, after successful repairs to the rich gas pipeline between the platform and the Kollsnes processing plant near Bergen.

The repair work has gone according to plan and the subsequent testing has shown that the pipeline is now ready for use. The Kvitebjorn platform could therefore resume production of gas and condensate on Jan. 27.

Petrobras to Intensify Investment, Exploration at Campos Basin

by  Jeff Fick      Dow Jones Newswires

The global economic crisis will likely force Brazilian state-run energy giant Petrobras (PBR) to adjust some of its 2009 investment plans, but the company should still be able to match 2008 capital expenditure levels.

“I think investments will be on the same level as in 2008,” said Nelson Rodrigues de Matos, an analyst at Rio de Janeiro investment bank BB Investimentos.
