China offshore oil specialist CNOOC said it will invest more than 300 billion yuan ($43.86 billion) in China’s southern Guangdong province in the next five years, a state-run newspaper reported on Thursday.
CNOOC chairman Fu Chengyu said the investment would go mainly towards South China Sea exploration, Huizhou petrochemical projects and a natural gas pipeline, the China Daily reported.
Norway-based oilfield construction outfit Siem Offshore has chartered out the multi-purpose offshore vessel Siem Marlin to a business of Chevron in Nigeria for $45 million.
The ROV-equipped subsea installation vessel will ply the Agbami field 70 nautical miles offshore Nigeria. The ship was only just delivered from western Norway’s Kleven yard.
A separate unnamed contractor will provide the engineering, ROV and subsea installation services when a first $15 million, 12 months term of work starts this week. A new two-year contract with a one-year option comes into play as soon as the first one-year contract is up.

Opening areas off northern Norway’s Lofoten and Vesterålen islands to petroleum operations could have major spin-offs both locally and nationally, according to the KonKraft collaboration.
A report for the Norwegian government finds that some 1,000-2,000 jobs might be created locally and regionally. But this and other effects depend on political decisions due in the near future. This study is one of three submitted to Terje Riis-Johansen, the minister of petroleum and energy, at the Top Executive Forum, which conclude a series commissioned by the government.
Subsea engineering and construction group, Subsea 7 Inc, has snapped up a contract with Brazilian national Petrobras to working in the Santos Basin, worth $200m.
Oslo-listed Subsea 7 said the work would take place at the Tambau Urugua and P-56 developments in the deepwater Santos and Campos Basins offshore Brazil.
The Tambau Urugua scope of work is to engineer, install and commission two 12″ rigid steel, 14.5 km long client-supplied gas flowlines and associated subsea equipment.
BANGKOK, THAILAND — Mermaid Maritime subsidiary Mermaid Offshore Services has purchased two Triton XLX class ROVs from Aquanos Ltd for GBP 3.7 million (US$5.3 million). The purchase includes the assignment of a client contract for one of the ROVs.
The ROVs are scheduled to be delivered to Mermaid Offshore Services by Feb. 27.
The two Triton XLX ROVs have water depth capabilities of up to 3,000 meters (9,842 ft). One three-month old ROV is operating on a contract with a potential value of GBP 500,000 (US$713,572) scheduled to expire in June 2009, while the second new ROV is on standby ready for work. Both include manufacturer warranties.
The purchase allows Mermaid to enter the deepwater and ultra-deepwater ROV markets. Mermaid believes that the units will be used by engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning contractors for ROV intervention and inspection and by deepwater MODU operators who may place the ROVs on rigs on a full time basis.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND — Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), through its renewables development division, Airtricity, has obtained consent from the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management for construction of the Breeveertien II offshore wind farm in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. This follows the consent to develop the West Rijn wind farm obtained last month.
Four leading international energy companies have joined forces to bid to win exclusive rights to develop wind farms under the terms of Zone Development Agreements as part of The Crown Estate’s third licence round for UK offshore wind farms.
Airtricity, whose parent company is Scottish and Southern Energy Plc, RWE npower renewables, the UK subsidiary of RWE Innogy, and two of Norway’s largest companies, Statkraft and StatoilHydro, have formed a consortium to combine their respective expertise, know-how and financial capacity to prepare for a joint bid for Round 3.
SYDNEY — Apache Energy Corp. Friday said that it has ceased production at its Stag and Legendre oil and condensate operations in offshore Western Australia because of bad weather conditions.
All non-essential staff are being evacuated from the Varanus Island gas processing plant, but production is continuing as normal, Apache said.
Staff are in the process of being evacuated from Stag and Legendre.
“A cyclone hasn’t been called, it’s a tropical low, but it’s a matter of standard operating procedure,” a spokesman for Apache said.
Spokesmen for BHP Billiton Ltd. and Woodside Petroleum Ltd. both said the companies hadn’t evacuated any staff but were monitoring the situation.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the low pressure system may develop into a tropical cyclone Saturday as it moves to the southwest towards the Pilbara coast.
