UK divers admit theft from wreck, face up to 6 years behind bars

Three British divers have admitted taking artefacts from a shipwreck in the Atlantic Ocean in 2002.

Peter Devlin, Steve Russ and Malcolm Cubin, from Cornwall, admitted illegally removing artefacts from the wreck, at a court in Santiago, Spain.

They also admitted planning to damage Spain’s cultural heritage. They each received a suspended one-year jail sentence and were fined £900.

Dear Mr. Offshore: Idiot for a supervisor

Dear Mr. Offshore,

I think I’m going to get fired from my job.   Is now the right time to tell my supervisor that he’s an idiot?

Not unless the emotional satisfaction you expect to get outweighs two outcomes; first, getting canned, and, second, having your old supervisor sabotage any new job.

My advice:  You are a professional.  Do your best work all the way to the end of the project.  Then head back to the beach getting ready to take some time off, keeping your thoughts to yourself.  If your sup really is an idiot, he will eventually be taken out by upper management after he trips over his own feet.  Years from now you may end up on a job with him and you have no way out.  This is a small industry and you never know where you’ll bump into him again.

Cyclone Jasper unlikely to hit Aussie coast

The second tropical cyclone to develop off the state’s north coast this month poses no immediate threat to Queensland, according to the Bureau of Meteorology

“It is almost out of Brisbane’s area of responsibility. It’s certainly no immediate to Queensland,” forecaster Terry Erbs said.

UK investment squeeze will hit North Sea oil exploration

The head of the North Sea’s main trade organisation will today warn an influential group of MPs that investment in Britain’s oil and gas fields could be cut in half in less than two years unless urgent action is taken by the government to counter the impact of the global credit crunch. Malcolm Webb, the chief executive of Oil & Gas UK, claimed last month that at least 50,000 jobs in Britain’s wider oil and gas industry could be at risk as oil companies struggle to access the funding to develop new and existing fields.

Petrobras: All company units operating normally

All Company Units are operating normally, and production and operating and employee security have not been affected by the movement, Petrobras says.

Where necessary, Petrobras is operating with contingency teams.

The Company reasserts its commitment to maintaining operating continuity and market supply.

Petrobras continues open to the negotiations and believes the negotiation table is the best place to solve the impasse. It emphasizes, however, that all measures will be taken to ensure process normalcy.

As work force ages, big oil use tech to retain knowledge

Major oil companies are looking for the solution to the work force crunch in their employees’ electronic trail.

ConocoPhillips, Chevron Corp. and BP PLC are encouraging employees to use handheld computers, interactive Web pages, blogs, social networks and other media to store information on how they make crucial decisions or resolve problems at the office and in the field.

Saudi Arabia: Aramco renews commitment to long-term plans

Saudi Aramco has today renewed its commitment to long-term investment plans in oil and gas during the global financial crisis, which has dampened demand for sources of energy. “Despite the difficulty in the current global economic climate and challenges facing the energy sector, the kingdom will continue its long-term investments to expand oil and gas sectors,” Chief Executive Khalid al-Falih said in a statement.

Schlumberger says another round of layoffs coming

Schlumberger is preparing for its second round of layoffs this year amid a global downturn in oil and gas activity that also has also pushed rivals to cut jobs. 

The world’s largest oil field services company, which in January announced plans to cut 5 percent of its work force, now expects “a further reduction of a similar amount” in coming months, Chief Executive Andrew Gould was expected to say this morning at the 2009 Howard Weil Energy Conference in New Orleans, according to a prepared text of his speech.
