Oil rig chopper ditches in Atlantic with 18 on board

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — A helicopter carrying 18 offshore oil workers has ditched in the Atlantic off the east coast of Newfoundland, the Canadian Coast Guard says.

“There’s no sign of the helicopter,” said Jeri Grychowski of the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax. However, she said two people were spotted in the water, as well as a life-raft. The coast guard said the workers were with the Hibernia production platform but Hibernia was referring calls to Husky, which operates the White Rose field.

The National Weather Service has decided to employ a more drastic approach to warning people about severe storms, hurricanes, or tornadoes that may hit the United States this year, by flashing ads on all networks and air frequencies and by using harsher words and overall language when describing the situation. Representatives say that this is the only way to capture the public attention, which apparently is focused on other things that are more important than the people’s own lives.

US Coast Guard: Tanker’s double hull prevented disaster

HOUSTON — Galveston Coast Guard Commander James Elliott on Wednesday credited the SKS Satilla’s sturdy double-hulled construction with preventing a major oil spill after the Norwegian tanker crashed into submerged debris late last week. An underwater examination of the ship, which was carrying 41 million gallons of crude oil, revealed a gaping hole in the port side of the vessel’s outer hull.

The ship was awaiting permission Wednesday to sail to Portugal, where it will be placed in dry dock for repair. The Satilla was en route to an offshore lightering facility near Galveston when it struck the Ensco 74, a jackup oil rig swept from its moorings off the Louisiana coast by Hurricane Ike.

Chino inmates get diver training

CHINO, CA — An innovative education program is taking place at one local prison, aimed at teaching inmates a vocation they can use upon their release. Wednesday, a graduation ceremony was held in Chino.

There was an unusual and surprisingly upbeat ceremony today inside the walls of the California Institution for Men in Chino. Twenty-one inmates were recognized for successfully completing training programs to improve their chances of succeeding “on the outside.”

NIGERIA — Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Limited, subsidiary of Shell Companies in Nigeria has disclosed that Nigeria loses about $1.5 billion yearly to crude oil theft and urged the government to urgently address the situation. 

Mutiu Sunmonu, the Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company made the disclosure while speaking at the CWC- organized Nigeria Oil and Gas conference and exhibition in Abuja last Tuesday.

Who ownes the Antarctic seabed? Chile, Argentina try to figure it out

SANTIAGO, CHILE — Ten Chilean and Argentine lawmakers gathered Thursday in the Antarctic to stake territorial rights after the U.K. laid claim to a wide swath of ocean bottom off the frozen continent, officials said.

The aim of the meeting “is to strengthen our nation’s legal position in the Antarctic Territory…and to support all the legal instruments of the Antarctic Treaty System, or ATS, including the (1998) Antarctic-Environmental Protocol,” Chile’s Chamber of Deputies said in a statement.

Price level stops StatoilHydro projects

The global market price on oil has dropped more than 100 USD over the last nine months. That might now force StatoilHydro to stall 40 planned projects.

StatoilHydro believes the current price level on oil will last for a long period. That forces the company to adjust development plans. The costs are too high compared to the income, the company argues. Therefore, the Norwegian energy company is reviewing 40 of its planned projects on the Norwegian continental shelf.

NaiKun Wind signs agreement with Prince Rupert Port Authority

NaiKun Wind Energy Group Inc. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Prince Rupert Port Authority covering important logistical elements for the construction phase of the company’s offshore wind energy project in northwestern British Columbia.

The agreement will allow NaiKun Wind to develop areas where its submarine cable will meet the shoreline. The cable transmits wind-generated electricity from the project site off the east coast of Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) to the British Columbia mainland’s electricity transmission grid.

Chevron not holding back on projects during downturn

Chevron is well positioned to deal with difficult market conditions given its strong balance sheet, numerous new growth projects coming onstream and a disciplined approach to cost management, executives said today at the company’s annual meeting with financial analysts in New York.

“We are continuing to execute our key strategies,” Dave O’Reilly, chairman and CEO, told the meeting. “We’re moving legacy projects to development, we’re moving resources to reserves, and we’re continuing to deliver our industry-leading exploration program. In the downstream, we’re continuing our program to improve reliability and feedstock flexibility, and we are sharply focused on reducing costs.”
