California mulls new offshore oil drilling amid need for revenue

As California teeters on the verge of insolvency, the governor has proposed expanding offshore oil drilling under a plan approved by environmental groups as a way to tap new revenue while protecting the environment.

In a rare agreement between environmental groups and an oil producer, Plains Exploration & Production Co. (PXP) has agreed to permanently shut down four oil platforms off the southern California coast and two onshore processing facilities in Santa Barbara by 2022, and donate 4,000 acres of land for public use, in exchange for the right to immediately expand drilling in the state’s seafloor from a platform it operates in federal waters.

Gulf Access Base, Port Aransas, Texas has the 200 acre McDermott facility on the Corpus Christi Ship Channel under contract with plans to close on the property in December of this year.

“This facility is the only one of its kind on the western Gulf”, says Sam Canterbury, Partner in the project. “The facility is highly stabilized with 4,700’ of bulkhead with up to 46 ft of water including a 1,650’ X 500’ slip. We are located only 150 miles from Alaminos Canyon operations which will allow operators to cut transportation costs more than half in many cases.”

WASHINGTON — House Republicans are calling for a hundred new nuclear power plants to be built in the next two decades as part of legislation they say is a better alternative than one championed by Democrats.

The legislation unveiled by the GOP Wednesday would increase production of oil and gas offshore, fast-track refinery construction and establish a trust fund using oil and gas royalties to invest in renewable energy.

Who is winning the Arctic game of Monopoly?

By Christoph Seidler

There are five states competing for control of the Artic’s oil and gas reserves, with Russia leading the pack. The US looks likely to remain on the sidelines, but what opportunities will the natural resource grab present for Canada, Norway and Greenland?

In the game Monopoly, players try to amass as much property as possible. The course of the game quickly becomes clear — whoever owns Boardwalk is on a winning streak and whoever owns Baltic Avenue is sure to end up empty-ended. Money, meanwhile, is the sole means to reach the game’s goal. In real life, however, things aren’t always as simple as a board game.
