After an eight-year absence, a bona fide dive shop has surfaced on the island. Island Divers Galveston, 525 25th St., offers lessons, SCUBA equipment for sale or rent, fills tanks and offers travel services.
Owner Tom Andersen, who opened the shop about two weeks ago, most recently was a commercial diving instructor for The Ocean Corp. in Houston.
The shop is getting plenty of interest, particularly from the Texas A&M University at Galveston and University of Texas Medical Branch crowds, Andersen reports.
One of the few and more popular places to dive in the area is the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected area about 110 miles off the Texas coast.
