Over 50 divers took part in the search on Lough Ree today

MORE THAN 50 divers took part in the search today for an Armagh man missing on Lough Ree since Thursday.

34 divers from Athlone Sub Aqua Club took part in the search, along with other groups from elsewhere in the country and garda divers.

The Lough Ree lifeboat was also involved, along with local fishermen. A specialist ‘SARDA’ search & rescue dog was also brought to the scene today.

An Irish Coast Guard spokesperson said the day’s effort had been stood down at 6.58pm this evening. It’s expected to recommence again tomorrow.

30-year-old Darryl Burke hasn’t been seen since Thursday’s boating accident. Two of his friends were rescued from the water — however one of them, 27-year-old David Warnock, later died.

The accident happened when the men were travelling to Carnagh from Hodson Bay in Athlone on Thursday evening.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who saw the conditions the boat was facing. The crew found one of the three men in the water at around 4pm, while the second was found at 5.15pm.
