Queensland police have found the body of a man inside a car in floodwaters in remote Cape York in the state’s far north.
Senior Constable Heidi Marek says police had been searching for the 69-year-old since Friday, when the vehicle the man was a passenger in was swept off a causeway at Archer River near Coen, north of Cairns.
She says a report will be prepared for the coroner.
“We received advice around 4:30pm [AEST] yesterday that police divers and the swift water rescue assessed the area and conducted a search,” she said.
“Now they’ve located the vehicle and also the missing man – unfortunately the man was located deceased.
“The family have been notified and the vehicle and the man are currently on their way to Weipa.”
Senior Constable Marek says it is not known whether any charges will be laid over the incident.
“That all forms part of the investigation – statements will need to be taken and obviously a full assessment of the scene, reports will be made to the coroner for further assessment,” she said.
